Description: The students will research and record information about the Lewis and Clark Expedition and present this information in the form of a pamphlet.

Classroom Component:
Note: The computers and Internet are only needed if you intend to have the students use the Internet as a resource and if you want them to generate the pamphlet via a computer. This lesson can be done without computers by simply having the necessary books, magazines, etc., available for research. The students can create the pamphlet by hand. Steps that a teacher needs to implement this idea:
- Obtain necessary materials.
- Suggested Books:
- Kids Discover Lewis and Clark (Volume 6, Issue 9, 1996)
- Missouri, Then and Now (McCandless and Foley, 2001)
- Mo. Studies Weekly, (Various volumes and issues)
- Break the class into partners.
- Each pair of students will research and document the significant events of Lewis and Clark's expedition using available resources (see materials list.) The students should have at least nine events with their corresponding dates.
- Allow time for students to construct a power paragraph about the importance of the expedition. (This power paragraph will contain a Power 1—An introductory sentence, three Power 2s—three sentences that support the initial Power 1, and another Power 1—a restated Power 1 sentence that concludes the paragraph.)
- Instruct the students to create illustrations or find free digital images about Lewis and Clark. If students draw their own pictures, it will be necessary to scan them into the computer so they can be inserted onto the pamphlet.
- Show students how to create a two-paged, three-columned word processing document. On page one, the left column will be for the power paragraph, the middle column will be for the list of resources used, and the right column will be the title page. On page two, all three columns will be for the timeline, and the events should be listed chronologically. (Although there are several options in creating a title on this page, it may be easiest to use the title "Timeline: Lewis and Clark Expedition." Have the students type Timeline: in the first column and right justify it. Then have them type Lewis and Clark in the middle column and center it. Third, have them type Expedition in the third column and left justify it. Finally increase the size of the title so that it spans across this page.)
- Give students time to type in all necessary information.
- Have the students present their pamphlets to the class.
